An Essay on Socrates and Alcibiades: a bestiary of oddities

This essay aims to reflect on Socratic strangeness and its atopia, based on the characters in Plato’s Alcibiades I, namely Socrates and Alcibiades. From this setting, it moves toward a comparison with the multiple figures of animals, gods, and hybrid or semi-divine creatures with which Plato pairs his master throughout several of his dialogues. The primary interest of this paper, however, is not to delve into a detailed analysis of Alcibiades I, but rather to reflect primarily on the figure of Socrates based on his various mirror images, all proposed by his most famous “student” throughout his vast work.
