Spartan women: their achievements and concerns
Keywords:
Lycurgus, Sparta, Spartan womenAbstract
This article aims to describe the condition of Spartan women in contrast to that of other Greek women. The objective is to show how the demands and realities of family and civic life shaped them into vigorous women – yet women whose vigor was ultimately channeled into submission. While their husbands and/ or sons fought in military campaigns for the interests of the fatherland (interests that were not always their own), the burden of managing the daily activities of family life fell upon them. Dedicated to overseeing the household, the elderly, children, enslaved people, assets, and properties, they were, in short, the ones who became the mistresses (kyríai) of Sparta.
