The ritual hymn: the case of the Orphic Hymns
Keywords:
hymn, orphism, ritual, mystery cultAbstract
This article proposes an approach to the hymn genre in the Greco-Roman world to analyze its forms, functions, and how, through its composition and performance, it became a type of poetic offering to the gods. As an example, we examine the Orphic hymns, an imperial-era hymnal used by a Dionysian cult association. This collection invokes the favorable presence of numerous gods through the accumulation of epithets that highlight their genealogy, exploits, and power, not only to obtain divine favor but also to honor them through the power of the word and the burning of aromatic offerings.
