Abstract

This article does not focus directly on the doctrine of Epicurus, but on the sobriquet “atheist”, which in the course of history was attributed to him. The court at Athens tried and condemned Anaxagoras and Socrates on the charge that they were atheists. Epicurus was never taken to court, yet he was tried and “condemned” on the same charge. His main theological theses were judged in various ways, starting with the Greeks, then with the Latins and with the subsequent Christian tradition, depending on the changing conceptions of each time. There are two issues analyzed here: the changing conception of atheist, and the chief polemical theses of Epicurus’ theology.
