Two women of Athens: Pericles’ companion, Aspasia, and Socrates’ companion, Xanthippe

Abstract

The article intends to show how Aspasia, a foreigner in Athens, overcame the seclusion of women through the freedom of spirit that characterized philosophical thinking. It also demonstrates how Xanthippe accomplished something similar, exercising in relation to Socrates the same love that marked the attitude and motivation of the philosopher in relation to knowledge. Aspasia, who was linked to Pericles, represents the ideal woman that Athenian policy could and should promote; Xanthippe, linked to Socrates, represents the ideal woman of the philosophical project as conceived by Plato in the Republic.
